The importance of journaling as an artist allows a record of observation while “uninspired,” and offers material for future work and thought. This is one of my favorite old sketchbooks/journals….I picked a flower or leaf from each place I sketched and pressed it in the pages. Shown here is one of my European sketchbooks where I journeyed off my planned path for travel and ended up taking a shipping barge to Greece. I was inspired by the ancient architecture and sculpture, and eventually found my way to the fountains of Delphi. After a long hot bus ride through silvery olive groves, I made it to where the oracle was said to have existed. I sat sketching in the shade, walked, and climbed; and picked a few leaves from a fig tree growing beside the fountain.
