This quick study of a Peonie was exhibited in the 146th annual juried exhibit at the Philadelphia Sketch Club. It was done from direct observation in one sitting. At the time I painted this, I would do quick studies of flowers as an exercise and preparation for more complex figure paintings that required the same skills but with vastly more subtle and difficult flesh tones.
In my current work I am exploring the technique used for these studies and subject as finished works of art, repeating the same alla prima technique in layers with multiple blossoms from the same flower.
