This picture was taken during my curator’s talk for the national exhibition, Responsorial, The Second Sex and the Contemporary Dialectics of Misogyny.
I did a national call for artists, and reviewed each submission carefully selecting pieces that demonstrated the theme in a wide variety of media and genres. Invitations were also sent to artists I had personal or professional relationships with whose work would build the exhibition as a group.

When we explore the feminine today how do we consider nature, creation, and perception with related histories and myths? How does the role women occupy in creation intersect with their existence as essential or inessential in other creative and intellectual realms?
Roland Barthes states in Camera Lucida that he was, “Straining toward the essence of her identity, struggling among images partially true, and therefore totally false. “The New Orleans Academy of Fine Arts is pleased to present this exhibition of artwork that explores themes of the multifaceted relationship between nature, femininity, and creation as informed by the contemporary social climate.

The exhibition will be on view for the month of September, with a special reception on Saturday September 8 from 6-8 pm. Please join us for light refreshments and an artist’s dialogue opened with song by Anais St. John.
This exhibition was also a tool for teaching. I brought my classes from Loyola, Tulane, and NOAFA to walk through and discuss issues related to creating original artwork and the power of communication through art.
